2018 DP Reel Spring 2018 REEL from Kristin Whitely on Vimeo . Artist Statement Growing up, I always had a passion for film, but I didn’t know of anyone who made it a career. It was discouraging to want to do something, but not being able to talk to someone about it. I took a leap of faith. I knew the only thing that would make me happy is to chase my dreams of being a cinematographer one day. So I did, and I’m beyond blessed that God put me here at UA to start my journey. Someone once said that understanding how to tell a story with a camera is one of the essential concepts of filming. Visual storytelling for me is an outlet to express myself. I love capturing nature at its finest. Although I have a lot to learn, I’m ecstatic to create works of art with meaning. My dream is to one day have my name on the credits of a film. That’s what I’m aiming the most. Right now, it’s harder than I thought, but I won’t give up. Moving forward, I plan to continue the skills of a c...

Reflection Paper
In the JCM Advanced Videography class, I have expanded my knowledge of new things, such as how to operate new cameras and lighting. With the camera, I’ve learned the camera settings, such as camera format, shutter speed, changing the iris, how to white balance, and knowing what lenses I would need for my shoot. All these things are essential to understanding. I also learned motivated movements, such as the Glide tracks, Slyders, Spider dolly, fig rigs, vest, and the Shape shoulder mounts. My favorite camera movement gear would have to be the shoulder mount because it was the easiest to use. It's important to know ways to utilize camera movement. lighting was important to discuss and understand as well.  I didn't know that there were so many layers of lighting equipment. We were introduced to the Arri kit and the diva lights. I learned how to setup c- stands, and the use of scrims, flags, gels, cookies, and how to use the sandbags property on the c stan...

Camera Movement

La La Land (2016) In the scene below of La La Land , a camera movement called whip pan was used, which is defined as a  fastly moved pan. The motivation between this camera movement is to give contrast between the two main characters. 2017 BET Soultrain Award ( Soul Cypher Scene)  Time_0:40 I believe a camera dolly was used for this scene only because of it's smooth transition from a high angle to moving closer to the objects face. The motivation used for this movement is to focus (give the audience's attention) on the subject. Spectre (2015) Time_0:45 This film would have to be one of my favorite action films of all time. For this scene, they used numerous tracking shot. By this, the camera is physically moving from the side to track the movement and action of the subjects.

2018 Sundance Interview with DP, Laela Kilbourn Laela Kilbourn, a Director of Photography, participates in an interview discussing the process of her recent film This is Home: Refugee Story , which was showcased at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. With this article, she explains her choices in the Cameras, glass, and experiences in making the film. Kilbourn's decision in the camera was the Canon EOS C300, which Kilbourn states she finds it very suitable for the work she creates. She also finds the quality, overall feel, and the outcome of color on the subject quite astonishing. For the lens, she used the 24-105mm f4 zoom because of the compact, low-impact camera profit. Then, she switched it to the Canon 17-120 Cine- Servo T2.95 EF zoom to become more comfortable with the subjects of the film. Because of the change in zoom she had to use a shoulder mount rig to balance the kens and the camera body. Overall, this article is quite interesting to know what camera and other neces...
